The team behind the #AUXE team: Roger Griffiths
Everyone already knows plenty about our Andretti United Extreme E drivers but we wanted to shine the spotlight on some of our lesser known team members as part of a new “The team behind the AUXE team” series.
First up, we have our Team Principal, Roger Griffiths. Originally from England, Roger now resides on the west coast of America with his wife and young daughter.
Roger is an extremely experienced motorsport veteran, having had over 25 years’ experience in the automotive industry developing cars and powertrains across Formula E, Formula 1, IndyCar, American Le Mans Series, Rallycross and BTCC.
Here’s what Roger had to tell us in our Q&A…
- What’s your job role with #AUXE and tell us a bit about what that involves?
Being the Team Principal for Andretti United Extreme E, I have overall responsibility for the planning, running and smooth operation of the team.
- What do you enjoy most about your job and Extreme E?
I enjoy the interaction with all aspects of the sport: whether technical, operational, commercial - the diversity is a lot of fun. On Extreme E, it is the message that the Championship is sending regarding the environment through the racing, the legacy programmes which showcases how individual countries and communities are impacted and what can be done to change their course.
- How long have you worked in motorsport and how did you get into the industry?
I started washing cars when I was 12-years-old for a local Jaguar / other exotica car mechanic. The first car I washed was a Ferrari 308GT4 - he then took me to various historic race meetings and I became addicted to the smell of Castrol R… my first professional job in motorsport was in 1995 at Cosworth in F1, that was after working with Lola Cars on my Masters thesis.
- Who’s your motorsport hero?
Ayrton Senna. I always followed the Lotus team with their JPS colour scheme rather than a specific driver but when Senna came along, he became the one driver that I rooted for at every race - even after he left Lotus.
- Which country would you most like to visit with Extreme E (doesn’t have to be on the calendar!)?
I was really excited about heading to Patagonia, Argentina but it looks like I might have to wait for that one!
- What’s your favourite chocolate bar?!
As long as it is covered in Cadbury’s milk chocolate, I don’t mind!
- Last book that you read?
Beneath a Scarlett Sky, Mark Sullivan.
- What’s your favourite movie?
It’s a toss-up between Lethal Weapon and Shawshank Redemption.
- First album purchased?
The first I will admit to… Eddie Cochran's Greatest Hits - what can I say, at 11-years-old I just loved Rock and Roll!
- Finally, do you have any secret talents?
I’m a Padi Qualified Rescue Diver – which might come in useful for some of the XE locations!
